The half-shaft is a solid shaft that transmits the torque from the differential to the wheel, driving the wheel to rotate and driving the car. Due to the installation structure of the hub is different, and the force of the half shaft is also different. Therefore, half shaft is divided into full floating, half floating, 3/4 floating three types.


1) Full floating half-shaft


General large and medium-sized cars are fully floating structure. The inner end of the half shaft is connected with the half shaft gear of the differential with splines, and the outer end of the half shaft is forged with a flange, connected with bolts and the hub. The hub is supported on the half sleeve by two tapered roller bearings spaced far apart. The half axle sleeve and the rear axle housing are pressed together to form the drive axle housing. With such a form of support, the shaft and the axle housing is not directly connected, so that the shaft only bear driving torque without bearing any bending moment, this half shaft is called "full floating" half shaft. The so-called "float" means that the half shaft is not subjected to bending load.


Full floating half shaft, the outer end is flange disc and shaft made into one. But there are some trucks to flange made into separate parts, and by spline sleeve in the half shaft end. As a result, both ends of the half shaft are splines, which can be used by changing heads.
